Recently we have seen dozens of 3G-ready devices being released, such
as Tablet PC’s, Smartphones, PDA’s etc. This leaves some people asking if it’s
possible to have 3G integrated laptops, bypassing the need to connect a USB
modem each time a connection needs to be established. The answer is yes, and 3G
notebooks are becoming ever popular. Notebooks with 3G support a variety of
different transmission speeds, including 3G, 3.5G, 3.9G and 4G.
Despite contradictions, laptops with embedded 3G broadband are proving to be in
high demand. A study conducted by Disruptive Research predicted that embedded
devices would account for 30% of wireless broadband subscribers in 3 years.
People making use of external USB modems would account for 58%. Embedded 3G
broadband deals from Orange and Vodafone offering a free laptop is said to be
more popular than laptop dongle bundles.
The “Broadband Internet Everywhere” package from Orange includes a free Asus Eee
901 laptop, including embedded 3G and valued at £299.99. Vodafone is offering a
3G broadband embedded Dell Mini 9 laptop free of charge if customers sign a 24
month contract at £15 monthly.
So how does it work? Usually the software that controls the internal 3G adapter
will be pre-installed so all you will have to do is insert your 3G broadband SIM
card into the notebook computer. You should then be able to access HSDPA, 3G and
GPRS networks. All laptops with in-built 3G have one-click access to the
internet. Data allowances are applicable to your service provider. Currently 3
is the only company that offers large data allowances, with their
“all-you-can-eat” data package.
What are the pros and cons? Currently speeds average from 3.6mbps to about
7.2mbps. If you are a demanding internet user this may not be enough, although
it is more than sufficient for casual use. You will even be able to stream
videos and play online games without interference. Also keep in mind that 4G is
on the verge of replacing 3G, although 3G devices will still work on 4G
networks. Despite these negative aspects, the positives are that everything is
integrated so you will never lose your USB modem again. The internet moves with
you without you having to worry about other devices.
Where do I get one? Wireless broadband laptops are available periodically from a
selection of providers, including Virgin Media, Vodafone and Orange. Major
laptop manufacturers such as Acer also offer notebooks with built-in wireless
internet connectivity. Keep in mind that not all broadband enabled notebooks are
available via a mobile broadband provider. This is good news for those
individuals who don’t want to be locked into a contract but want to enjoy the
benefits of a broadband notebook.
Additionally, notebooks with 3G can be summed up as:
- Wire-free internet connectivity wherever there is mobile phone signal
- No wireless hotspot needed due to 3G being used
- No dongles or modems as connection is direct on laptop
- High speed, all-in-one portable access
